Remaining Teachable

Someone once said, "If you aren't teachable, you cannot evolve". I'm not exactly sure who someone is, but nonetheless I'm grateful to have come across such words. Learning is a process that is never truly complete. Especially if you want to continue to grow. It's with this in mind that I finally took the leap to schedule a writing consultation with one of my favorite writers a few months ago.

For a while I kept convincing myself that she was too good to read my work. Or that I could put the money I would be spending toward something else. When truthfully, the day I took a chance on faith and booked with her was likely the best decision I could've made. Not only did I walk away with a new writing exercise, but I walked away with a new perspective.

I am a writer and that is my main priority. Leave the editing to the editors, because that's their priority. I also learned that I had to become comfortable with creating things that may not ever be seen. Because, at the end of the day the most important part is growth — not the pats on the back I yearned for. Recognition will come and go, but my art and passion for the art will always remain. THAT is what should keep me going. What WILL keep me going.

So, I'm remaining teachable by doing all of that and more. Doing. Creating. Writing. Acknowledging the growth, even if I'm the only person clapping. I had to become comfortable with the fact that whether people are paying attention or not the only attention that really matters is mine. Learning and unlearning, is still a part of what being teachable means. Every learning experience looks different from the next person's and that's fine just as long as the growth is happening.
